Conceived as a physical manifestation of endurance, the building is symbolic of the resilient and flexible fiber of the Navy—shaped and strengthened over centuries of maritime power. Sail-like volumes sweep across the site, expressing a sense of balance between forces in recognition of journeys comprising a history and culture “Forged by the Sea.”

  • A Maritime Nation: Expressing U.S. Naval prowess as an irrepressible maritime nation formed by global dynamic elemental and sociopolitical forces.

  • Nexus: Composing a sense of place at the intersection of three elemental forces: land, sea, and air while connecting the museum to its surrounding context.

  • Vessel: Purposefully binding the three elemental forces in a tangible expression of the Navy ethos and core values of honor, courage, and commitment.

  • Multiplication: Referencing a fleet of vessels, graceful forms conjoin to shape the overall massing.

  • Phase 1: Phased construction begins with the site then prioritizes the atrium and SSEAS Galleries.

  • Phase 2: Completing the full building in a second phase allows for a timely and economical way to open the museum.
